How Do I Know if My Thimble Fits Correctly?
A properly fitted thimble should sit snugly inside the splice with no visible gap between the rope and the thimble groove. If you can easily wiggle the thimble around inside the eye once the splice is finished, it is too small. If the eye looks stretched or the thimble will not seat all the way into the curve of the splice, it is too large.

Do I Need a Thimble if I Am Using a Soft Shackle?

That said, if your setup connects to a soft shackle that gets repeated hard use, adding a thimble still gives the eye extra shape retention and can extend its life, especially on a winch line that gets spooled and unspooled often.
